Being exposed to several different woman of Māori and Pacific Island descent and seeing the roles they have played in not only the households but also on a Marae, at funerals, birthdays, weddings, etc, and seeing how underappreciated and unrecognised they are is upsetting.
Flipping the emotions, paying homage to these women, and helping to maintain a positive future is a huge influence on this project. I wanted to let each individual express themselves and their uniqueness through their choice of clothing, but also allow them to feel relaxed and comfortable with me behind the lens.
For this project, I reached out to several family members and friends to participate and many chose to support me in this collaborative work. As a whole, we represent a diverse range of ethnicities - Fijian, Tongan, Samoan, Māori, Niuean, Cook Island, and ages.
